LEXINGTON, Va. – The Mercer Bears fell in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament to No. 6 VMI, 1-0, at Patchin Field in Lexington, Virginia, on Tuesday afternoon.
Yeirin Mejia scored his ninth goal of the season in the 12th minute. Mejia sits second in the SoCon in goals and total points (20). The senior forward recorded a brace in VMI's 4-2 win over Mercer on Saturday, October 24.
Mercer's offense struggled to find its footing in the first half. Freshman defender Andrew Seward attempted the Bears' lone shot in the opening 45 minutes. The Bears threw everything at Santiago Rocha in the closing moments of the match, forcing the senior netminder to make four saves in the final 10 minutes of the contest.
Sophomore goalkeeper Michael Roth started between the pipes and saved four of the Keydets' five shots on goal. Six of the Bears' position players completed the entire 90 minutes. Dominic Economopoulos logged a career-high 57 minutes.
