Five Bears Toss Combined One-Hitter in Saturday Win
2/23/2019 8:07:00 PM | Baseball
Mercer takes weekend series with 10-1 win over Alabama A&M
Â
Mercer starting pitcher Tanner Hall (2-0) threw five no-hit innings while four relievers dominated the final four innings to help the Bears improve to 5-1 overall. Mercer took a no-hitter into the ninth inning, but surrendered a two-out infield single to the visiting Bulldogs (0-8).
Â
A six-run first inning by Mercer set the tone for the game. The Bears batted around the lineup in the opening frame, collecting seven hits while jumping out to the 6-0 advantage. Doubles by Garrett Wilkinson and Zach Miller highlighted the early output.
Â
Alex Crotty, who went 3-for-5 while earning the start at catcher, hit two RBI doubles in the third and eighth innings – the latter scoring two Bears – to keep Mercer's offensive momentum rolling. Scott Smith, Matt Blair, Caleb Mitchell and Ben Brock handled the relief work on the mound.
Â
Coach Gibson's Take
"We continue to get great starting pitching from our guys and Tanner Hall was no exception today," said head coach Craig Gibson. "Four other guys came out of the bullpen and did really well today too. The big first inning offensively helped us out and proved to be enough to win.
Â
"Last weekend we faced some adversity against Evansville and today we showed that we're getting a little better in that area. Hopefully we'll get a third win tomorrow and get our first series sweep of the season."
Â
Player of the Game
Tanner Hall put together his best start as a Bear with five no-hit innings on the mound. Other than hitting one batter, Hall did not allow a baserunner. He struck out five Bulldogs while earning his second win of the year.
