Mercer finishes opening month of season with 8-1 record
MACON, Ga. – Strong pitching and a three-run fifth inning led Mercer to a 5-1 victory over Florida A&M on Wednesday afternoon at OrthoGeorgia Park.
Mercer improved to 8-1 overall with its sixth straight win to end the month of February. Five Bears saw action on the mound, including Josh Farmer, who earned his first collegiate start, and the duo of Nick Spear and Kevin Coulter, who allowed just one total hit over the final three innings.
Both teams tallied two hits apiece and traded runs in the first inning. After Florida A&M (2-9) took a one-run lead in the top half of the first, Mercer responded with a RBI single from Trevor Austin that plated Kyle Dockus, who led off with a single and stole two bases to get into scoring position.
RJ Yeager roped a go-ahead RBI triple off the center-field wall in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 2-1 advantage for the Bears. Mercer would score twice more in the inning; Yeager crossed the plate on a fielding error at first base and Angelo DiSpigna, who walked, scored on a fielder's choice.
Mercer's bullpen held the Rattlers scoreless over the final eight innings of play. Zach Graveno (1-0), who will start on the mound on Sunday at Florida State, tossed 1.1 innings of relief and picked up the win in the process.
Coach Gibson's Take
Opening statement…
"Today we put together what is probably our best game of the season," said head coach Craig Gibson. "Pitching was great, we were clean defensively and we were good in situations offensively; we moved runners, bunted runners over, stole bases and hit-and-ran well. Those things put us in the right position to win today.
On the weekend trip to face Florida State…
"We're excited to see what we're made of against a quality Florida State program this weekend in Tallahassee. Sawyer Gipson-Long will be ready to go on the mound for us and we'll see what we get on Friday night."
Player of the Game
Freshman left-hander Holton McGaha bridged the gap with 2.2 scoreless innings of relief out of the bullpen and fanned a team-best four Rattlers. McGaha allowed just one hit and walked one batter while keeping Florida A&M at bay into the fifth inning.
