Mercer swept by visiting Sycamores at OrthoGeorgia Park
MACON, Ga. – Mercer hit three home runs but fell behind early for the third time in as many games and fell to visiting Indiana State, 9-4, at OrthoGeorgia Park on Sunday afternoon.
The loss was Mercer's (9-8) fourth in a row and marked the second straight weekend that the Bears have been swept. Indiana State improved to 12-1 overall with the series-finale win. Kel Johnson went deep twice and Zach Miller added a third home run in the loss. Mercer left 12 runners on base and struggled to capitalize on a 13-hit day.
Another quick start by the Sycamores put Mercer in an early hole. Indiana State scored once in the first inning and added five runs in the second as it owned a 6-0 lead. Mercer starting pitcher Zach Graveno was chased after 1.1 innings, giving way to seven relief pitchers who saw time on the mound on Sunday.
Miller's home run came in the second inning. The Bears would not score again until the fourth when Johnson hit his first of two home runs. An RBI infield single by Kyle Dockus complimented Johnson's long ball and pulled Mercer within three runs, 6-3, by the end of the sixth.
Johnson's second home run made it a two-run game in the seventh, but Indiana State would plate one run in the eighth and two runs in the ninth on a home run to pull away.
Coach Gibson's Take
"There were plenty of good individual moments for us this weekend, but this proves that we have a lot of work to do if we're wanting to compete against a quality club like Indiana State," said head coach Craig Gibson. "Our margin for error is small and we have to play well in all phases…we'll continue to get better as the weeks go on."
