Pitching staff shines as Bears defeat Savannah State, 8-1
MACON, Ga. – Five Mercer pitchers struck out 12 batters and allowed just one unearned run in an 8-1 victory over Savannah State at OrthoGeorgia Park on Tuesday night.
Â
Mercer (10-8) snapped a four-game losing streak with its second in-state win in as many weeks and earned its 18th consecutive victory over Savannah State (2-8-1). The Bears out-hit Savannah State, 11-6, and were led by a two-run home run by David Posas and a pair of two-RBI performances from Trevor Austin and Leyton Pinckney.
Â
A passed ball in the first inning led to Savannah State's lone run of the contest. Kevin Coulter went three innings in his first start of the season and limited the Tigers to three hits and one walk while striking out three batters. RBI singles by Angelo DiSpigna and Austin led a swift rally by the Bears in the home half of the first. Mercer owned a 5-1 lead by the end of the second inning after Posas deposited his two-run home run past the right-field wall.
Â
Garrett Wilkinson added a RBI double in the sixth before Pinckney capped the game with a two-run single in the seventh.
Â
Coulter, Scott Smith – who earned the win against his former team – and Andrew Kane combined to retire 10 consecutive batters in the third through sixth innings. Nick Spear and Sawyer Gipson-Long handled the rest from the seventh inning on, striking out three batters apiece.
Â
Coach Gibson's Take
"The pitching from our five guys tonight was really solid and pushed us to a good mid-week win," said head coach Craig Gibson. "We continue to play good defense behind our pitchers as well. Different guys continue to have good approaches at the plate; we need to build on this and carry it into Friday night."
