Mercer drops 6-4 contest to Binghamton on Friday
MACON, Ga. – Mercer out-hit Binghamton but committed an atypical four errors in a 6-4 series-opening loss on Friday night at OrthoGeorgia Park.
Â
Four Bears had multi-hit games including Angelo DiSpigna (3-for-4) as Mercer fell to 10-9 overall. Nine runners were left on base by Mercer in the contest.
Â
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning, Mercer rallied back when Kyle Dockus led off the frame with a double and scored on a RBI single from RJ Yeager. A two-run home run by Kel Johnson in the following at bat put Mercer ahead, 3-2. The Bearcats (5-6) would score four of the game's final five runs, however, including two in the top of the fourth against Mercer starting pitcher Beau Healy, who earned a no-decision after six innings of work.
Â
Healy struck out five batters and scattered seven hits while allowing four runs, three of which were earned. He was relieved by Scott Smith in the seventh with a 4-4 game on hand. Trevor Austin had tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth with a RBI single that scored Yeager. Smith was effective on the mound, but surrendered a solo home run in the seventh. Three defensive errors by Mercer in the eighth led to a 6-4 Binghamton lead, which proved to be the final score of the contest.
Â
Coach Gibson's Take
"Give Binghamton some credit; they played well and defensively, they're really sound," said head coach Craig Gibson. "They threw strikes and we made mistakes. You can't make mistakes in a close game and expect to win. We have to regroup and get ready for Saturday."
