Mercer’s Comeback Falls Short Against Binghamton
3/16/2019 7:59:00 PM | Baseball
Bears score seven runs over final two innings in 10-7 defeat
Â
Binghamton (6-6) took the series victory while Mercer dropped to 10-10 overall. The Bears trailed 10-0 entering the bottom of the eighth inning before they scored seven runs, highlighted by a pair of home runs from Kel Johnson.
Â
Mercer starting pitcher Tanner Hall went three innings on the mound before turning it over to seven relievers. Ball State plated one run in the first, three in the third and five in the fourth to take a substantial lead on the Bears.
Â
Johnson hit a two-run home run in the eighth and followed it up with a ninth-inning grand slam. Three Bears tallied multi-hit games. Five pitchers – Matt Blair, Kyle Bialousz, Jackson Kelley, Holton McGaha and Sawyer Gipson-Long – allowed just one run on three hits collectively over the final five innings.

Coach Gibson's Take
"I'm proud of our guys for showing some fight at the end after facing a really strong performance from [Binghamton's] starting pitcher, who was probably the best arm we've faced all year," said head coach Craig Gibson. "He was just that dominant, and that will get us ready for league play. Hopefully some of the fight we showed at the end will carry over into Sunday."
