Tanner Hall highlights strong effort by Mercer pitching staff
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Left-hander Tanner Hall limited Wofford to one hit over five innings as Mercer defeated the Terriers, 4-1, to salvage a Southern Conference series on Sunday at Russell C. King Field.
Mercer (13-16, 2-4 SoCon), which dropped the first two games of the series, avoided a sweep as Hall, Sawyer Gipson-Long and Scott Smith scattered six hits and fanned five batters in an impressive collective effort on the mound.
Both teams went scoreless through the first three innings. Hall avoided trouble by stranding two runners on third base in the first and third frames. Mercer struck first with a RBI single by Collin Price in the top of the fourth. The base hit scored RJ Yeager, who walked and stole second base before crossing the plate.
Yeager (3-for-3) came up big again in the following inning as he plated Trevor Austin (leadoff double) with a RBI single through the right side. The same duo of Austin and Yeager struck again in the seventh when the former singled and advanced to second base before scoring on the latter's third hit of the day, giving Mercer a 3-0 advantage.
Hall was relieved by Gipson-Long in the sixth inning. A two-hit seventh inning by the Terriers gave way to their first run of the game and cut Mercer's lead to 3-1. Smith took over on the mound and stranded the tying run on second base in the seventh before closing out the contest with a 2.1-inning save. Angelo DiSpigna added an insurance run in the eighth with a solo home run to center field.
