Bears’ Rally Comes Up Short at The Citadel
4/5/2019 11:10:00 PM | Baseball
Mercer rallies but unable to overcome early six-run deficit
The Bears moved to 13-17 overall and 2-5 in Southern Conference play with the loss. Seven Mercer pitchers saw action on the mound and Kyle Dockus scored a team-best two runs.
Early trouble arose for Mercer when Beau Healy couldn't get out of the first inning. The Citadel tagged Healy for four hits while he walked one batter, giving way to a 2-0 lead for the Bulldogs. Kyle Bialousz, who relieved Healy, helped Mercer avoid further damage in the inning with two quick outs to leave the bases loaded.
The Bulldogs added to their lead with three runs in the second and one in the third.
Collin Price put Mercer on the board with a two-out, two-run double in the top of the fourth and cut the 'Dogs' lead to 6-2. Kyle Dockus and RJ Yeager brought home two more runs for Mercer in the fifth on an RBI double and RBI single, respectively. The two-run fifth inning pulled Mercer within two, 6-4, and knocked out Bulldog starting pitcher Jordan Merritt.
Will Bowdoin, Mercer's fourth pitcher of the contest, tossed a 1-2-3 frame in the home half of the fourth to quiet The Citadel's bats and continue a momentum shift in the Bears' favor. A two-run, four-hit sixth inning by the Bulldogs extended their lead back to four runs, however.
Mercer's final run of the game came on an RBI double by Garrett Wilkinson in the seventh.
