Kyle Dockus drives in go-ahead runs in ninth inning
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Kyle Dockus broke a tie with a go-ahead, two-run double in the ninth inning to power Mercer to a 10-3 Southern Conference win over The Citadel on Saturday at Joe C. Riley Park.
The Bears (14-17, 3-5 SoCon) scored seven runs in the top of the ninth to pull away from The Citadel (10-21, 3-5) for a series-tying victory. Kevin Coulter tossed six quality innings in his fourth start of the season before a one-hour, 17-minute rain delay halted the game before the start of the seventh.
Mercer loaded the bases on a hit by pitch, bunt single and walk before Dockus unloaded a double into the gap that scored two runners and gave the Bears a 5-3 lead. The following four Bears proceeded to draw walks, opening up the gates for a run-filled half inning.
The Bears entered the rain delay with a 3-2 advantage. Kel Johnson put Mercer ahead with a solo home run in the top of the first inning. A sacrifice fly by Angelo DiSpigna and RBI single by Trevor Austin in the fourth extended Mercer's lead to 3-0. The Citadel tightened the gap with a two-run double in the home half of the fourth, but Coulter settled in with a pair of scoreless innings before the delay.
Sawyer Gipson-Long (3-3) earned the win with two innings of relief and Holton McGaha closed out the contest with a scoreless ninth inning. The two relievers tossed a combined four strikeouts and did not issue a walk.
