Visiting Sycamores take the series with 7-3 contest
MACON, Ga. – Mercer fell behind early for the second straight game and lost a 7-3 contest to visiting Indiana State at OrthoGeorgia Park on Saturday afternoon.
Indiana State (11-1) clinched the weekend series with the win after picking up a 12-7 win over the Bears (9-7) on Friday night. Mercer dropped its second series in as many weeks after claiming its first two of the season.
A two-run home run in the top of the first inning gave the Sycamores the advantage. They'd add two more runs in the top of the fourth to own a four-run lead before Mercer starting pitcher Tanner Hall was relieved. Hall (2-2) struck out seven batters but surrendered four runs on five hits and walked three.
RJ Yeager (3-for-4) scored Mercer's first run on a sacrifice fly by Trevor Austin in the fourth, cutting Indiana State's lead to 4-1. Yeager then drove in a pair in the fifth with a double down the left-field line to pull Mercer within one run.
Mercer turned to Kevin Coulter for the final three innings on the mound. The senior was unable to quiet the Sycamores' bats, giving up three runs on five hits as they pulled away from Mercer.
The two teams were originally scheduled to play two seven-inning games in a doubleheader, but instead opted to play one nine-inning game.
Coach Gibson's Take
"I thought we played much better today compared to Friday, but we just have to play better in all phases of the game in order to beat a team like Indiana State," said head coach Craig Gibson. "We have to pitch better, defend better and be more offensive…it is as simple as that. We'll rally the troops and get ready for the series finale on Sunday."
