Angelo DiSpigna shines offensively in 4-2 defeat
ATLANTA – A trio of defensive miscues led to a four-run inning for Georgia State and dealt Mercer a 4-2 road loss to the Panthers on Wednesday at the GSU Baseball Complex.
Mercer (15-18) owned a 2-0 advantage entering the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Panthers (10-23) capitalized on three errors by the Bears to take a lead they did not relinquish. A throwing error by RJ Yeager was followed by a hit-by-pitch and walk from Matt Blair to load the bases. Blair was replaced by Will Bowdoin, who surrendered a two-run single through the left side before a pair of throwing errors allowed all four runs to score on the same play.
Angelo DiSpigna drove in both of Mercer's runs with a single in the first and double in the third, scoring RJ Yeager and Collin Price, respectively. DiSpigna went 2-for-3 with a walk to reach base three times in the contest.
The Bears sent seven pitchers to the mound during the staff day. Sawyer Gipson-Long tossed a pair of hitless innings to open the game and was followed by one hitless frame by Beau Healy. Mercer did not allow a hit to the Panthers until the fourth inning and struck out eight batters.
