Hall Powers Bears to Doubleheader Split on Saturday
4/13/2019 9:34:00 PM | Baseball
Junior left-hander tossed eight innings in series finale
Â
The Bears (16-20, 5-7 SoCon) dropped game two of the series, 11-7, earlier on Saturday as Western Carolina (16-16, 5-7 SoCon) clinched the series. Junior left-hander Tanner Hall tossed a career-high eight innings while fanning eight Catamounts in the series finale.
Â
Game 2: Western Carolina 11, Mercer 7
The Catamounts blasted three home runs over the fifth and sixth innings to knock out Mercer starting pitcher Beau Healy and take the front end of Saturday's doubleheader. Bill Knight was a bright spot for the Bears, going 2-for-3 with his second career home run and a RBI double as well.
Â
After falling behind, 2-0, Mercer knotted the contest in the bottom of the second on Knight's two-run shot to left field. Western Carolina quickly regained its lead with two runs in the third, only to see the Bears tie it again with consecutive RBI doubles by Knight and Garrett Wilkinson in the fourth.
Â
Healy was knocked out of the game in the sixth when Western Carolina built a 10-4 lead. Mercer rallied with one run in the sixth, seventh and ninth frames, but it was too little too late to overcome the Catamounts' offensive attack.
Â
Game 3: Mercer 6, Western Carolina 2
Tanner Hall willed Mercer to a win in the series finale, allowing just one run on six hits over the career-best outing on the mound. Hall issued just one walk and struck out eight batters to lead the Bears; he was relieved by Scott Smith and Sawyer Gipson-Long, who closed out the ninth.
Â
The Bears put up a four-spot in the second with a RBI single from Trevor Austin and bases-clearing double by Kel Johnson. Another double by Wilkinson, followed by a sacrifice fly from RJ Yeager in the fifth, was all Hall needed to roll through the contest and seal Mercer's win.
