Mercer Rides Freshmen’s Bats to Sweep of Rattlers

Bears seal four-game season sweep of Florida A&M on Tuesday
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Three freshmen totaled four home runs to help Mercer complete a four-game season sweep of Florida A&M with a 10-7 victory at Moore-Kittles Field on Tuesday.
Five of the Bears' 10 runs came via the long ball as Angelo DiSpigna (twice), Collin Price and Bill Knight left the yard. Mercer trailed 4-1 after two innings, before rallying and holding off the Rattlers (18-24) over the latter third of the game.
The season sweep of the Rattlers was Mercer's first since 2014. Scott Smith earned the win with two scoreless innings pitched in relief and was one of seven Bears to see action on the mound Tuesday.
Price opened the scoring with a solo home run to left field in the top of the second. The Rattlers plated four runs on two hits in the home half of the second after Beau Healy walked a pair to start the frame. DiSpigna pulled Mercer within one with a two-run shot in the third and was followed by a solo home run from Knight in the fourth that knotted the contest.
DiSpigna completed the Bears' steady rally in the fifth, hitting his second long ball of the game to push Mercer ahead, 5-4. Garrett Wilkinson added an insurance run in sixth when he scored on a throwing error after reaching with a one-out walk.
Florida A&M pushed an unearned run across in the sixth against Andrew Kane, but Mercer pulled away with a four-run eighth inning, capitalizing on three walks and a hit by pitch, as well as a wild pitch. The Rattlers scored twice in the ninth before Kyle Bialousz closed the door with his second career save.
