Tanner Hall, Nick Spear hold Belmont to two runs in weekend finale
NASHVILLE – Mercer pitchers Tanner Hall and Nick Spear stifled Belmont's bats all afternoon and led the Bears to a series-clinching 4-2 win at E.S. Rose Park on Sunday.
Â
Hall logged 6.1 innings and earned his seventh win while Spear tossed 2.2 frames for his second save of the weekend. The duo allowed just two runs on nine Belmont (24-25) hits and struck out eight batters to help Mercer (28-23) win its fourth consecutive weekend series.
Â
The Bears capitalized on three Belmont errors to score twice over the first three innings. Kyle Dockus led off the game with a double and scored three at bats later on a fielding error at third base. Trevor Austin reached and scored on two separate errors in the third inning.
Â
Hall (7-4) did not allow a base runner past second base in his 6.1 innings. He retired 10 consecutive batters from the end of the second inning through the fifth inning. Mercer's bats backed Hall with a third run in the top of the seventh when Bill Knight, who opened the inning with a pinch-hit double, scored on a double down the left field line by Austin.
Â
Hall was replaced by Spear after giving up a one-out single in the home half of the seventh. Spear got into trouble against the Bruin offense, allowing two singles to load the bases before he walked in Belmont's first run of the game. The Bruins added a second run with their fourth hit of the inning before Knight threw out the tying run at the plate from right field to end the frame.
Â
Mercer added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Austin scored on a sacrifice fly by Kel Johnson. Spear then worked around a two-out single to close out the game and series in the home half of the ninth.
