Mercer falls to Furman, 5-3
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Mercer came up empty-handed in its regular season finale, falling to Furman, 5-3, on Saturday afternoon at Latham Stadium.
Â
Mercer (29-26, 14-10 SoCon) now shifts its focus to the Southern Conference Tournament at Fluor Field in Greenville on May 21-26. The Bears' seed and first-round opponent have yet to be decided, but they will play on Wednesday, May 22.
Â
Tanner Hall (7-5) took the loss on the mound, tossing 4.2 innings in his 14th start of the season before turning it over to four relievers. Mercer owned a 2-1 lead through 3.5 innings before Furman (25-29, 13-11) plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth and did not look back. The Paladins added one run in the fifth and eighth frames.
Â
Angelo DiSpigna and Kel Johnson drove in one run apiece in the top of the third with a double and single, respectively, in consecutive at bats. The Bears made things interesting in the top of the ninth when they loaded the bases with two outs on three walks. Zach Miller, who pinch ran for Johnson earlier in the game, was hit by a pitch to bring home Jordan Ammons. Price had a chance with the bases juiced, but flew out to right field to end the game.
