Mercer suffers 11-0 loss on Thursday, faces elimination in Greenville
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Mercer suffered an 11-0 loss to top-seeded Samford on Thursday at Fluor Field in the quarterfinal round of the 2019 Southern Conference Baseball Championship, presented by Holston Gases.
Â
Fourth-seeded Mercer (30-27) now faces elimination the rest of the tournament, starting with a Friday afternoon clash against No. 3 UNCG (34-19). First pitch against the Spartans is slated for 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
Â
The Bulldogs (41-17) struck early, plating eight of their 11 runs in the first four innings. Seven of those runs came against Mercer starting pitcher Kevin Coulter, who surrendered 10 hits over 2.1 innings pitched before turning it over to the bullpen. Samford scored a pair in the top of the first and added a five-spot in the third, keyed by a grand slam by Preston Moore. A fourth-inning solo home run made it an eight-run game before three more runs came across in the ninth.
Â
Kel Johnson tallied two of Mercer's five hits in the contest. Four Bears relievers – Josh Farmer, Andrew Kane, Kyle Bialousz and Jackson Kelley – combined for four consecutive scoreless innings on the mound in the fifth through eighth frames. Samford's Jesse McCord threw seven innings and struck out six Bears en route to earning the win.
