Mercer Falls to Georgia State in Five Sets

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Mercer Bears volleyball team fell to the Georgia State Panthers Friday night at GSU Sports Arena, 2-3.

Set One | The Bears got off to a slow start with the Panthers taking five of the first seven points. The Bears worked their way back to tie the game at 10 each behind kills from Malia Randolph, Annie Karle, Jaida Howell and Nya Steele. The Bears and Panthers traded points. Each team didn't have a lead larger than two. The Panthers would go on and take the set 25-22.

Set Two | The black and orange got on the board first with a kill from Major but the Panthers quickly retaliated taking a 4-2 lead. Mercer worked their way back with three kills in a row from Randolph, Major, and Rayanne de Oliveira to take an 11-9 lead. The Bears kept rolling taking a 19-12 lead, the largest of the set. Mercer would take the set, 25-18, on a kill from de Oliveira.

Set Three | Mercer came out of the gates hot, quickly taking a 6-4 lead. After a few errors from the Bears, the Panthers tied it up at 10. Georgia State would go on a 5-1 run to take a 18-14 lead. Brittany Major's back-to-back kills would put the Bears within three points of the Panthers 23-20 lead. Mercer would come from behind and take the set 26-24.

Set Four | Both squads started out strong, tying it up at 12 each behind points from Karle, de Oliveira, and Major. The Panthers would push on and take set four, 25-15.

Set Five | The Bears got off to a slow start in the fifth set. Georgia State took seven of the first 12 points. Mercer would cut the margin to three but Georgia State would take the set 15-7.

The Bears will head to Chareleston, S.C. to take on The Citadel on Wednesday Sept 30 at 6p.m.
