Volleyball Falls to Samford in Conference Opener

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer Bears dropped their conference opener, 0-3, to the Samford Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon.Â

MERCER VS. SAMFORD

Set One (23-25) | Mercer jumped out to an early 2-0 lead behind a kill from Brittany Major and a Bulldog error. Samford retaliated quickly going on a 5-0 run to take the lead. Annie Karle, Brittany Major, and Malia Randolph added to the score cutting Samford's lead to two. The Black and Orange would take the lead back with two kills from Karle, one from Rayanne de Oliviera, and an ace from Megan Smith. The match would go back and forth until the Bulldogs pulled to a three point lead. The Bears would try to claw back but Samford would take the set.

Set Two (18-25) | The momentum from the first set would carry into the second. The Bears and Bulldogs traded points early in the match. Taylor Lynch, Jaida Howell, and Lexi Uhrhan contributed to the score will kills and an ace. The Bulldogs went on two 3-0 runs to take a seven point lead, the largest of the match. Lynch's kill started a 4-1 run for the Black and Orange. Smith, Randolph, and Howell also contributed to the run. Unfortunately, it was not enough. Samford would take the second set.

Set Three (24-26) | Mercer continued the pattern of scoring first behind a service ace from Agnieska Paskevic. Samford and Mercer would continue to trade points back and forth. The Bears went on a 6-1 run behind kills from Randolph and Karle, a service ace from Uhrhan, and a few Bulldogs errors. The set would continue with both teams going band a forth. A kill from Brittany Major kept the Bears alive for two more serves but Samford would ultimately take the set and match.

Mercer will host Samford for the final match in the series tomorrow night, Feb. 1, for the annual Dig Orange night. The match is set for 6 p.m. in Hawkins Arena.
