Mercer scores season-high 14 runs to sweep Jackson State
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer baseball team completed its three-game sweep of Jackson State with a 14-0 win on Sunday afternoon. The Bears scored a season-high 14 runs on 12 hits in the contest to earn the win.
Â
Leading the Bears offensive attack was Trevor Austin who had three hits and drove in two runs. Ryan Archibald and Bill Knight each hit a home run in the contest for the Bears. Mercer's pitching staff once again made life difficult for the Tigers hitters at the plate as they only allowed five hits for the game.
Â
After a scoreless first inning, Mercer took advantage of Jackson State pitching woes. Collin Price led off the bottom of the second inning with a walk and Angelo DiSpigna hit a ground-rule double. Garett Delano drew a walk loading the bases. Price scored on a wild pitch for the first run of the game. David Burke followed with a walk and DiSpigna came into score on a passed ball. Trevor Austin picked up his first RBI of the game with a sac fly that put the bears ahead, 3-0.
Â
Jackson State picked up its lone hit off the Bears starter, Fred Wilson, in the top of the third with a single to right field. After issuing a walk, Wilson got a ground out to end the inning.
Â
The Bears scoring in the fourth started after RJ Yeager drew a walk and stole second base. Bill Knight continued to swing a hot bat as he belted a home run to center field putting Mercer ahead 5-0.
Â
Wilson was locked in during the top of the fourth inning as he retired the side in order. In the frame, he had two strikeouts and fly out to center field.
Â
Mercer again put up a crooked number in the bottom of the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Price hit into a fielder's choice that plated one. After a walk, Delano legged out an infield single to extend Mercer's lead to 7-0. Coming off the bench, Ryan Archibald picked up a two-run RBI single to center field. The next hitter, Austin, doubled down the left field line scoring another and growing the lead to 10-0.
Â
The bullpen for the Bears scattered four hits over the final five innings of the game. Tommy Green entered the game in the fifth inning and struck out the side for the Bears. Josh Farmer was the only other pitcher to pick up a punch out for Mercer in the game, fanning a Tigers' hitter in the seventh.
Â
Mercer tallied its last four runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Archibald led off the inning with a monster home run to right-center field. The Bears were in business after back-to-back singles by Austin and Colby Thomas. Yeager walked to load the bases two batters later to set the table for Jordan Ammons who drew a bases loaded walk to pick up an RBI. Price followed with an RBI walk of his own putting Mercer ahead 13-0. DiSpigna plated the last run of the game for Mercer with a ground out.
Â
Over the final three innings of play, the Bears limited the Tigers to two hits. The Bears got a fly out to end the game and Mercer came away with a 14-0 win and a three-game sweep in its opening weekend.
Â
Coach Gibson's Take
"I am proud of the way Fred Wilson went out there and pitched as he made his first career start. This is probably the first time in my career that I saw an opening weekend shutout. Our pitching staff pitched outstanding this weekend. I am pleased with the way we played this weekend. We faced a good club, which has a great chance of winning its conference and going to the postseason. This weekend was a total team effort as we had many people contribute. We are excited to play Wednesday against Georgia Tech."
