Mercer faces its first in-state opponent on Wednesday
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer University baseball team returns to action on Wednesday when it heads to Atlanta to face in-state opponent Georgia Tech. This will be the only matchup between these two schools this season.

Following a 2-1 opening weekend, the Yellow Jackets turn their attention to the Bears of Mercer. Georgia Tech won the season opener against Eastern Kentucky on Friday night. The Yellow Jackets dropped the second game of the series and answered back to win game three. The Wednesday is the first midweek game of the season for either team.
Before the 2020 season was canceled, Georgia Tech was off to an 11-5 start and 9-3 at home.

Georgia Tech's veteran shortstop and captain Luke Waddel was name to the 55-man preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List this season. He is the 10th Yellow Jacket selection since 2009 on its preseason watch list, joining Derek Dietrich, Kevin Jacob, Deck McGuire, Jed Bradley, Buck Farmer, Kel Johnson, Joey Bart and Tristin English.

Waddell got out to a fast start this season as he is hitting .417 with one home run and two RBI. Drew Compton leads the team with a .625 average. Compton also leads the team with two home run and five RBI. As a team, the Yellow Jackets are hitting .280 with 12 extra base hits.

On the mound, Georgia Tech has a 4.33 ERA this season. Over the first 27 innings of the season, opponents are hitting .208 on the season with seven extra base hits. Coming out of the bullpen, Luke Bartnicki and Hugh Chapman have made two appearances this season. Each outing for Bartnicki and Chapman have been one inning each.

- Mercer is coming off an opening weekend sweep of Jackson State. The Bears outscored the Tigers 33-0 over the three games.
- Wednesday's matchup between Georgia Tech and Mercer is the first of nine meetings between Mercer and in-state schools.
- Redshirt senior Taylor Lobus was named Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday. He pitched seven scoreless innings and tallied a career-high 11 strikeouts. His previous high for strikeouts was four, which he accomplished five times.
- The Orange & Black pitching staff did not allow an earned run during the opening weekend. As of Monday morning, only three teams in Division I baseball did not allow an earned run. Only two did not allow a run (Mercer and Southeastern Louisiana).
- Mercer was picked to finish second in the 2021 Preseason SoCon Coach's and Media Polls. The Bears were picked behind Samford in both polls.
- Under the direction of Coach Craig Gibson, the Bears are 8-15 against Georgia Tech. Six of the eight wins for Mercer have come when playing in Atlanta at Mac Nease Baseball Park. The two teams did not meet last year because of the pandemic.
- Yeager has started every game at shortstop since he arrived on campus as a freshman. He has currently started 143 consecutive games heading into the 2021 season.
- Mercer is one of just four NCAA Division I programs to win at least 35 games in each of the past 10 full seasons, joining LSU, Florida State and Vanderbilt.
- Since 2010, the Bears are the winningest Division I baseball program in the state of Georgia. The Bears have won 395 games, 12 more wins than Georgia Tech who is second on the list.
