The Bears hosts The Citadel in SoCon action
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer Football team returns home to face The Citadel in its Southern Conference opener on Saturday at Five Star Stadium. The Bears and Bulldogs kickoff at 3:30 p.m.

SCOUTING THE CITADEL
The Citadel comes to Mercer with a 0-4 mark on the season and have not played since Oct. 10, 2020 when they lost to Army West Point 14-9.

The Bulldogs are averaging 7.2 points per game, while allowing 31.8 points per contest. The Citadel is averaging 195.2 yards on the ground, the 11th best mark in the FCS. They have four players averaging 30 or more yards per game. Through the air, the Bulldogs are averaging 66.5 yards per game. Leading the offense is Jaylan Adams, who played in all four games for the Bulldogs during the fall.

The Citadel is led on the defensive side of the ball by SoCon Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, Willie Eubanks III. Eubanks III leads the team with 43 tackles, five tackles for loss and two sacks. He ranks fifth in the FCS in tackles per game. Chris Beverly is second on the team with 26 tackles.

Quick Hits
- Mercer is looking for its first win of the 2020-21 season and first since Nov. 2, 2019. The last win for Mercer came against Samford in triple overtime, 36-33. Caleb Dowden hit the game-winning field goal in the third overtime to give the Bears the win.
- The Bears added depth to the team over the break. Mercer welcomed Nakendrick Clark as a running back, Kainalu Pu'u Robinson at safety and Drake Starks at tight end. All are eligible to play this spring.
- During the Bears last contest of the fall, sophomore Lance Wise made a huge impact on the defensive side of the ball. He tallied a career-high 20 tackles, which was one shy of tying the school record set by Sidney Otiwu during the 2019 season.
- Coming off the bench against Wofford, freshman Carter Peevy set career-highs in in passing yards and completions. Peevy threw for 131 yards on 11 completions.
- The Bears are in unique opportunity this season. This will be the first game Mercer has played in the spring since 1892.
- Redshirt sophomore Deondre Johnson does it all for the Bears. Over four games, Johnson is averaging 111.7 all-purpose yards per game. He has tallied 195 yards on kick returns, 141 receiving yards and 111 rushing yards.
