Bill Knight led Mercer with four RBI in the game
Â
Collin Price led the Bears with three hits on the day, all singles. Brandon Michie and Bill Knight followed with two hits each, and Knight led the team with four RBI in the contest. Angelo DiSpigna and Knight both blasted home runs for Mercer in the game.
Â
After a scoreless first, Mercer struck first in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Price picked up his first hit of the day to get the Bears going. DiSpigna reached on a hit-by-pitch, and Colby Thomas drew a walk, which loaded the bases. After a strike out ran the Bears to two outs, Brandon Michie singled to center field, allowing two Bears to cross home. With a 0-1 count, Knight followed with a three-run home run to left center to grow the Bears' advantage to 5-0.
Â
The Thundering Herd cut into Mercer's lead in the top of the third inning. Cyrus Grimes continued to have a hot bat in Macon as he hit a solo bomb to right field. After a ground out, Kyle Schaefer hit a home run to center field. Marshall was not done, however, as it tacked on three more hits and scored one additional run in the frame to make it a two-run contest, 5-3.
Â
Mercer added to its lead in the bottom of the third. Garett Delano singled to shortstop and went to second on a Price walk. DiSpigna came up and hit into a fielder's choice, which retired Price, and the Thundering Herd tried to turn two. On the play, Marshall threw the ball away, and Delano scored for Mercer putting the home squad ahead 6-3.
Â
The game remained 6-3 until the top of the fifth inning when Marshall trimmed the lead down to one, 6-5. The first run for Marshall came on a throwing error by Taylor Lobus. Luke Edwards picked up an RBI single and after four and a half Mercer led 6-5.
Â
Marshall took the lead in the top of the sixth inning after Ryan Leitch hit a home run and Geordon Blanton hit a sac fly putting Marshall ahead 7-6. The lead did not last long as Mercer put two runners on with one out after back-to-back errors. RJ Yeager hit a sac fly, which scored one to tie the game at 7-7.
Â
Marshall's hot bats remained hot in the seventh inning. After a leadoff walk, Zach Inskeep's single gave the Bears a pair of base runners. Peter Hunzal followed with a three-run bomb to break the tie and give the Thundering Herd a 10-7 lead.
Â
Mercer struck back right away. Price led off the bottom of the seventh by drawing a ten-pitch walk. DiSpigna followed with a rocket that cleared the right field wall for a homer and Mercer trailed by a mere run, 10-9. After back-to-back outs, Mercer's Brandon Michie singled to right-center and went to second on a wild pitch. Knight singled him home, tying the game at 10-10.
Â
The Thundering Herd answered back in the top of the eighth inning. After Edwards reached on an error, Travis Sankovich doubled, putting two on in scoring position. After a ground out, Mercer intentionally walked Hutzal to load the bases but allow for the double play opportunity. Leitch stepped up to the plate and put the ball in the air, recording a sacrifice fly to give Marshall a one-run lead, 11-10.
Â
Mercer looked to strike back with one out in the bottom of the eighth. Price tallied his third single of the game, while DiSpigna and Thomas walked loading the bases. Mercer could not get the tying run across as they hit into an inning ending double play.
Â
The Orange & had and one more opportunity in the bottom of the ninth but could not get anything going and were retired in order, falling by a run, 11-10.

Coach Gibson's Take
"This was a heck of a game, where the offense dominated for both teams. We jumped out in front, but you have to give Marshall a lot of credit as they continued to fight and battle. They fought back and took the game. They have good quality arms, and facing them will help us get ready for league play. I am proud of our team as we continued to battle after falling behind during the middle innings. Game three will be fun, and whoever wants it the most will win the series."
