Mercer returns to conference action this Friday and Saturday
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer baseball team travels to South Carolina for Southern Conference action this weekend. The Bears will face The Citadel in a three-game set that starts on Friday at 5 p.m.Â

Scouting The Citadel
The Citadel enters the weekend slate with the Bears holding an 8-12 overall record and a mark of 1-4 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel has played 16 games at its home park and are 7-9 when playing there. The Bulldogs are coming off a trip to Western Carolina were they only played two of the three scheduled games, losing both.

As a team, the Bulldogs are hitting .291, the second best average in the Southern Conference. Jeffery Brown leads the team with a .363 average. Tyler Corbitt follows hitting .359 on the season with five home runs and a team-high 14 RBI. When Corrbitt gets on, he is a perfect 6-for-6 on stolen bases. Cole Simpson (.333) and Noah Mitchell (.300) round out the .300 hitters for the Bulldogs.

On the mound, the Bulldogs have a team ERA of 5.55 and are allowing teams to hit .262. Gant Starling is the closers of the staff and he has an ERA of 3.18 and three saves. The Bears will face Cameron Reeves, Jake Pilarski and Lathan Todd this weekend. Reeves is 2-2 with an ERA of 4.17, Pilarski is 2-1 with a 6.25 ERA and Todd is 1-3 with an ERA of 6.75.

Besides Starling, Devin Beckley has made 11 appearances out of the pen. Beckley has an ERA of 5.82 on the season.

- The Bears head to Charleston, S.C. for their second Southern Conference weekend of action. Mercer looks to improve on its 2-1 SoCon record. Mercer currently sits in second place in the Red Division of the SoCon.
- Last week, Knight hit .438 with seven RBI. He drove home six in the first game of the doubleheader against Wofford on Saturday and finished a triple shy of the cycle.
- Since the 2010 season, Mercer has won the most games out of all the Division I Baseball teams in Georgia. The Bears have won 407 games and are the only team to have 400 wins during this stretch.
- Mercer has hit 32 home runs in 24 games during the 2021 season. The 32 home runs rank 12th best in the nation.
- Brandon Michie leads the team with seven home runs and ranks second in the Southern Conference.
- You'd better watch out for Garett Delano. He is a two-way player for the Bears and has 2-0 record on the mound and an ERA of 3.12. Not only is he pitching well but he has the fourth best batting average on the team posting an average of .323.
- The Bears lead the Southern Conference with 47 doubles, which ranks 24th in the NCAA. Twelve different Bears have hit a double, and the team is led by Angelo DiSpigna's eight two-base knocks.
- RJ Yeager has started every game at shortstop since he arrived on campus as a freshman. He has currently started 164 consecutive games. Yeager will make his 165th career start on Friday.
- Mercer was picked to finish second in the 2021 Preseason SoCon Coaches and Media Polls. The Bears were picked behind Samford in both polls.
- Mercer is one of just four NCAA Division I programs to win at least 35 games in each of the past 10 full seasons, joining LSU, Florida State and Vanderbilt.
- Since 2010, the Bears are the winningest Division I baseball program in the state of Georgia. The Bears have won 401 games, seven more than Georgia Tech who is second on the list.
