
Mercer Sweeps UNCG

The Bears have won 15 of their last 17 games
Mercer collected 26 hits on the day, including seven doubles and five home runs. Colby Thomas led the way for the Bears over the two games with five hits. Bill Knight followed with four. RJ Yeager had a team-high five RBI on the day. Coming out of the pen, Taylor Lobus picked up his sixth win of the year in game one, while Robert Bennett picked up his second win in game two. Luke Sutko closed out the finale and picked up his fifth save.
Game One
The Spartans' bats looked to be heating up to start the game as UNCG had two hits in the first inning. With runners on first and second, Tommy Green settled in and got an infield fly and a fly out to left to end the inning.

Following the first, the Bears kept the Spartans bats quiet. UNCG picked up 3 hits over the final six innings of the contest. With one out, Sam Koruschak singled for the third hit of the game. Green settled in and struck out the next two ending the inning.

The Bears got their scoring started in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Mercer got a rally started. Jackson Cherry walked and Trevor Austin singled putting runners on the corners. Bill Knight came up and doubled down the left field line scoring one. Yeager followed with a single that scored two putting Mercer ahead, 3-0.

The Orange & Black added a run in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Thomas drew a walk and pinch hitter Jordan Ammons hit a double down the left field line, which scored Thomas to extend the lead. The lead grew to 5-0 in the fourth. Knight doubled to lead off the inning and came into score when Garett Delano had a double to right center.

Mercer broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth by scoring five runs on three hits. With runners on second and third and one out, Austin drew a walk to load the bases. After a pitching change, Knight drew a walk putting the Bears ahead 6-0. After the second out of the inning, Brandon Michie cleared the baes with a grand slam to right center extending the lead to 10-0.

Mercer's pitching continued to keep the Spartans bats quiet. UNCG picked up one hit off Taylor Lobus in the top of the sixth to lead off the inning. After the hit, Lobus got a punch out and two pop outs to end the inning.

The Bears exploded for seven runs on six hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. Le Bassett and Angelo DiSpigna got the scoring going with back-to-back home runs. With the bases loaded, Yeager drew a bases loaded walk. Trevor Rider came to the plate and doubled home two more, extending the lead to 15-0. The Bears weren't done as Antonio Brown singled home one. Coming up for the second time in the frame, Bassett picked up his second hit of the day with a single that scored another. After the frame, Mercer led 17-0.

Wesley Franklin came in to close out the game and he got the first batter to ground out before issuing a walk. However, he got the next two hitters out and the Bears run ruled the Spartans 17-0.

Game Two
Like game one, the Bears bats got hot in the bottom of the second inning. Delano singled for the first hit of the inning. DiSpigna came up and hit a ground ball to the pitcher and the Spartan pitcher threw the ball down the right field line and Delano came around to score. DiSpigna went to second on the error, and scored on an RBI single by Thomas. Thomas followed by stealing second and went to third on a throwing error by the UNCG catcher. With the runner on third, Bassett stayed hot and doubled to left field scoring one. Austin followed with a single putting runners on the corners. Knight came up and singled up the middle scoring Bassett and Mercer had a 4-0 led.

Following the four run inning, the pitching settled in for both teams and the teams combined for one hit over the next two innings. UNCG looked to get things going in the top of the fifth inning. With a runner on and two outs, Corey Rosier came and singled putting two on, however the Bears Robert Bennett got the next batter out to end the inning.

The Spartans got to the Bears in the top of the sixth inning. With a runner on, Hogan Windish and Spencer Smith hit back to back singles to load the bases. Pres Cavenaugh singled through the right side to score two runs and cut the Bears lead in half. Following the single, Josh Farmer setteled down and got the next three hitters to strike out to end the frame.

The game stayed 4-2 in favor of the Bears until the bottom of the fifth. Austin doubled to left field to get things going. Following the first out of the inning, Yeager hit his fifth home run of the season, this one a two-run shot to left field putting Mercer ahead 6-2.

Luke Sutko, who came in during the seventh inning, came out for the 8th and Cavenaugh singled. He got a strike out of Tom Grose for the first out. After a ground out for the second out, the Spartans had a runner on second base. Cavenaugh tried to steal third but Collin Price threw him out trying to steal third.

The Bears lead grew to 7-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out, Colby Thomas hit a monster home run down the left field line.

Sutko came out for the ninth inning and got the first hitter to strike out before Rosier hit a home run for the third run of the day for UNCG. Josh Madole and Greg Hardison followed with back-to-back singles. Sutko settled down and got the next hitter to pop out and struck out Smith to end the game.
