The Bears earn their first ranking in program history
CHICAGO – For the first time in program history, the Mercer football is ranked in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25, coming in at No. 23.
Â
A national panel selects the Stats Perform FCS Top 25, which this spring includes only schools that have committed to playing a regular schedule. A first-place vote is worth 25 points, a second-place vote 24 points, all the way down to one point for a 25th-place vote.
Â
The Bears (5-5, 5-2 SoCon) are currently on a four-game winning streak, with the last three victories coming against ranked opponents. The Bears started the winning streak with a win over Western Carolina before defeating then-No. 9 Chattanooga, 35-28. The winning continued with a victory over then-No. 17 Furman, 26-14. The third win over a ranked foe came this past Saturday when the Bears topped then-No. 20 ETSU, 21-13.
Â
The three wins over ranked teams are the most in a single season for Mercer.
Â
Mercer looks to continue its winning ways this Saturday when it heads Birmingham, Ala., to face Samford at Seibert Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET. With a win and a VMI loss on Saturday, the Bears will be Southern Conference champions.
