Mercer Heads to Wofford to Conclude Regular Season

The Bear wrap up regular season play on Thursday and Friday at Wofford
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer baseball team wraps up its 2021 regular season with a three-game set at Wofford on Thursday and Friday. The Bears enter the weekend in first place in the Southern Conference.

The Bears have clinched a spot in the 2021 Southern Conference Tournament which will be held in Greenville, South Carolina from May 27-29. Â The Bears can clinch the regular season title with a sweep of the Terries or the series win over Wofford and a Samford loss.

The series between the Bears and Terries starts at 4 p.m. on Thursday with a single game, and concludes with a doubleheader on Friday at 2 p.m.

Wofford enters the final weekend of the regular season with a 32-18 overall record and a 19-8 mark in SoCon play. The Terriers have clinched a berth into the SoCon Tournament next weekend. Wofford is coming off a 5-4 victory over Kennesaw State on Tuesday night. This will be the second weekend series with Mercer.

As a team, the Terriers are hitting .289 on the season, the third-best mark in the SoCon. They have three players hitting over .300 this season, led by Colin Davis at .360, which ranks sixth in the league. Once on base, Wofford is second in the nation in stolen bases with 122 on the season.

Besides Davis, Nolen Hester is hitting .356 with 38 RBI on the season. Davis leads the team with 15 doubles and 11 home runs.

The team ERA of 4.79 is the second best mark in the league. Mercer will face Josh Vitus, Dom Marcoccio and Elliot Carney to start the series. Carney has had a strong senior year as he has pitched two complete games. He threw a no-hitter on April 17 against UNCG and missed his second no-hitter by an out on May 9.

Dalton Rhadans leads the team in appearances with 20. He has pitched 52.0 innings out of the pen and has 56 strikeouts. Matthew Marchal has appeared in 15 games and has an ERA of 6.06 in 32.2 innings pitched.

- Garett Delano was one of 10 semifinalists for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award. This award is selected by the College Baseball Foundation. Delano is the only player from the Southern Conference on the list.
- Mercer has hit 87 home runs in 52 games during the 2021 season, the most in the nation. Angelo DiSpigna and RJ Yeager lead the Bears with 13 home runs, while Brandon Michie follows with 12.
- On Tuesday, RJ Yeager was named a semifinalist for the Brooks Wallace Award, which is awarded to the top shortstop in the country. He was one of 30 semifinalist for the award and the only player from the Southern Conference on the list.
- Mercer finished the 2021 season with a 7-2 mark against in-state opponents. The seven wins were the most out of all the Georgia programs.
- May 4 was Opening Day for the minor leagues. Mercer has seven former players playing in the minor leagues this season.
- Taylor Lobus leads the Bears with nine wins this season, which is the most in the SoCon.
- Luke Sutko leads the Southern Conference with 12 saves. His 12 saves are the third-most in the NCAA. He also leads the conference in appearances with 29.
- The Bears lead the Southern Conference with 108 doubles, which ranks fourth in the NCAA. Fourteen different Bears have hit a double, led by Bill Knight and RJ Yeager with 15 two-base knocks, which is the second-most in the SoCon.
- Mercer is one of three teams in the Southern Conference that has tallied 400 or more strikeouts this season. Mercer has 453 on the season, which is second-best in the SoCon. Lobus leads the team with 67. Mercer has 15 pitchers that have picked up at least one strikeout this season.
- Yeager has started every game at shortstop since he arrived on campus as a freshman. He has currently started 192 consecutive games.
- Mercer was picked to finish second in the 2021 Preseason SoCon Coaches and Media Polls. The Bears were picked behind Samford in both polls.
- Mercer is one of just four NCAA Division I programs to win at least 35 games in each of the past 10 full seasons, joining LSU, Florida State and Vanderbilt. This season, Mercer has won 34 games, while Vanderbilt has 37 victories, LSU 32 and Florida State 28.
- Since 2010, the Bears are the winningest Division I baseball program in the state of Georgia. The Bears have won 428 games, 19 more than Georgia Tech which is second on the list.
