Mercer faces Samford in opening round
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced the 2021 Baseball Championship presented by Holston Gases. Mercer will open the championship against Samford at 7 p.m. on Thursday night from Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C.
Â
Earlier this season, the Bears took two of three against Samford in Birmingham. The Bulldogs won the first game of the series, before Mercer bounced back and won the final two games.
Â
This year there will only be four teams participating in the conference championship, which will be a double elimination. The new format introduced the Red and Blue Divisions, with the two division champions automatically qualifying for the SoCon tournament. The two teams with the next two best records/winning percentages, regardless of the division, also qualified.Â
The games are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. each day of the championship. The title game will take place Saturday, May 29, at 7 p.m., with a second game, if necessary, to begin on Sunday, May 30, at 12 p.m. The tournament winner earns the league's automatic bid to a NCAA Baseball Regional. All games will be broadcast live on ESPN+.Â
