Chile went 3-0 overall.
SANTIAGO, Chile – Mercer's Felipe Haase helped Chile clinch a berth in the FIBA Americas Qualifiers with a 3-0 record in the pre-qualifier tournament this week.
Haase led Chile to wins over Bolivia, Paraguay and Nicaragua in a three-day span to help the team advance out of group B into the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Americas Qualifiers. Chile joins the group B runner-up and the Bahamas and Cuba out of group A. 12 teams received an automatic bid to the qualifiers, and the 16 total teams will be divided into four groups of four teams to play home and away contests for the first round of qualifiers. 12 of the 16 teams will then advance to round two, but only four teams will make it out of the second round of qualifiers.
Haase's team began pre-qualifying action in dominant fashion, dispatching Bolivia in the late game on the first night of play, 105-52. Haase earned the start at forward, and struggled from the floor, shooting 1-of-6 but grabbed four boards and dished out three assists in the win.
The following night, he made his presence known and once again earned the starting nod. In 35 minutes, he scored six points and battled hard on the glass, pulling down 11 rebounds – 2 offensive and 9 defensive – in a 66-62 win over Paraguay. His six third quarter boards paved the way for Chile to take a sizable lead after three quarters. Although Chile nearly relinquished its advantage late in the fourth period, Haase collected a pivotal rebound with 17 seconds remaining. Paraguay was forced to foul, and Sebastian Herrera knocked down two free throws with 12 seconds remaining in regulation to extend Chile's cushion to four points. Paraguay came up empty on its final two attempts for the floor as Chile improved to 2-0 with the 66-62 victory.
Having already secured a spot in the qualifying round, Haase came off the bench in Chile's final game as the squad looked to keep its unblemished record intact. In 19 minutes, the Santiago native shot 3-of-5 from the floor for six points, grabbed three rebounds and handed out three dimes to lead Chile to a 82-63 win.
Chile's group assignment and game dates for the first round of the qualification tournament will be announced at a later date.
