Mercer Takes Team Title
Kennesaw, Ga.—Mercer men's golf coach Jason Payne likes the way his team has competed this fall, but said the team just needed to win a tournament.
With such motivation, the Bears simply went out and won the 11-team Pinetree Intercollegiate Tournament by 22 shots over Western Kentucky and Francis Marion.
Tobias Jonsson won his second straight individual title. He followed up his Carolina Cup championship with a 6-under par, 210 tournament total for 54 holes, beating Jackson Skeen of Tennessee Tech by four shots.
"Great team win and another incredible performance by Tobias," Payne said. "A great statement win for our program."
The Bears fought windy, cold, tough conditions in Tuesday's third round. Mercer's team total was +7. On the surface that may not seem that impressive, however it was nine shots better than the next lowest team round. That's a testament to the difficult conditions.
It was Super Swedes Jonsson and Gustav Sjoberg leading the way for Mercer. Jonsson becomes the first Bear to ever win back-to-back titles. He navigated the par 72 Pinetree Country Club with rounds of 68-72-70—210. Sjoberg finished tied for fifth with a 2-over 218. Rece Moore came in 14th, with his 7-over 223. Jonathan Parker came in right behind him at 8-over and tied for 15th. Trey Mixon was 10-over to tie for 24th. Mercer also had August Jording competing as an individual, so his score did not figure into the Bears' team total. Jording tied for 34th with a 15-over 231.
