Straight Set Win Caps Successful Week
Macon, Ga, Madison Brengle has repeated as the Mercer Classic singles champion after a straight sets win over Panna Udvardy at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center on Oct. 23.Â
Brengle got off to a fast start. Uvardy forehand miss hits and Brengle placing her serve helped the American get some breathing room and a 3-1 lead. While Brengle is not hitting her serve with noticeable pace, she places it and moves it around where her opponent doesn't know what is coming.Â
There was more of that as Brengle kept holding to get to 5-3.Â
The set-deciding game featured some high quality shot-making. Brengle kept moving Udvardy from side to side and the Hungarian was trying to move Brengle off the court with angles. Brengle ran down the shots forcing errors and took the opener 6-3.Â
A lot of the same in the second set as Brengle earned a service break and backed that up to a 3-0 lead. More down the line backhands and more errors from Udvardy. 6-3, 6-1, Brengle. Brengle is now 16-4 in her career playing in Macon.Â
"It's just so comfortable to play here," added Brengle.Â
Brengle had car trouble this week as the hurricane floods from Florida, may have left water in her car.
"Everyone pitched in and helped me as it's sometimes tough to be without a car."
ÂBrengle missed out on a chance to "double" this week as she and her partner, Maria Mateas were beaten in the finals by Anna Rogers and Christina Rosca.Â
