Mercer Leads Carolina Cup First Round

Sjoberg Tied For Second

Spartanburg, S.C.—With two golfers in the top five, the Mercer men's golf team has the team lead after one round of the Carolina Cup, at the Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, S.C. As a team, the Bears shot a six-under par 282 on the par 72 course, to have a three-shot lead over Central Florida, Lipscomb, and Connecticut in the 14-team field.

This is the Bears' first tournament since playing in the Streamsong Invitational Sept. 12-13. Mercer finished fourth of 12 teams in that event.
"Good start for the team," after a multi week lay off," Bears' coach Jason Payne said. "Strong rounds from Gustav (Sjoberg) and Rece (Moore). Going to need to keep making birdies to stay in contention over the next 36 holes."

Sjoberg shot a five-under 67 and is in a three-way tie for second place with Juan Camilo Vesga of UCF, and Gregor McKenzie of Lipscomb. They are three shots behind Connecticut's Jared Nelson at -8.

Moore is in a a group that includes Hugo Lari of Kennesaw State, and Griffin Tarver of Charleston Southern at four-under 68, all tied for fifth.
The other Mercer scores from the first round were Tobias Jonsson (-2, 70), and Jonathan Parker and Trey Mixon (both +5, 77).
