Parker Makes Hole-In-One
Charleston, S.C.—In evaluating a golf tournament, sometimes it's relevant to look at the entire field. And such examination of the Daniel Island Classic shows while each team may have not had a score it was proud of, there was plenty of company.
Consider Mississippi State won the event, with a team total, of +15, its second highest score of the fall. And no team over the three days, had a team round of even par. Every team round was above par.
So coach Jason Payne's Mercer squad had plenty of company with its tournament total of +40. While that may seem high at first glance (especially in light of the Bears' strong fall), it was still good enough to beat eight teams, as Mercer placed 10th in the 18-team field. And the Bears were only three shots out of finishing eighth.
Jonathan Parker led the Mercer squad through the week. He sandwiched an even par round of 72 between rounds of +4 and +2 finishing in a tie for 12th place at 6-over par. Parker also provided the highlight of the tournament with the only hole-in-one.
Parker aced the fourth hole in the third round of play, on Tuesday. He scored the hole-in-one on the par-3 188 yard hole. It was one of only four eagles in the tournament.
Following Parker on the Mercer scorecard were Trey Mixon (+8, t22); Tobias Jonsson (+12, t37); Gustav Sjoberg (+16, t58); and Rece Moore (+16, t77).
This tournament concludes the Bears fall schedule. It's been a fall that's seen the Bears set a new team scoring mark of -39 at the Streamsong Invitational; Be ranked briefly as high as number nine in the country, Mixon and Jonsson each earn Southern Conference Golfer of the Week honors; Jonsson take medalist honors at the Pinetree Invitational, and the Bears win the team title at that event.
Mercer begins the spring portion of its schedule in February.
