Bears fall 4-3

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's tennis team fell to Georgia State by the narrowest of margins, 4-3. This was Mercer's first home loss of the season and dropped their overall record to 4-3. With the win, Georgia State improved to 2-3 on the year.

Mercer clinched the point for doubles play by winning two of the three matches. Mary Courville and Naya Tillitt defeated Chivu and Stanescu of GSU by a score of 6-1. Lehka Varudandi and Kristin Yordanova were able to earn the doubles point for Mercer when they defeated Aldrich and Kumar, 6-1.

Mary Courville got Mercer on the board first in singles play, earning a 6-4, 6-1 win over Eva Chivu.

Georgia State responded by winning number four, two, and six singles in that order to take a 3-2 lead.

Lauren Rich was able to even things up a 3-3 when she took down Andreea Stanescu, 6-3, 6-3.

The deciding match would take three sets to determine a winner. Lekha Varudandi won the first set 6-4 and Angel Carney took the second set 7-5. Varudandi jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the third when she began cramping. She would fight through the pain but Angel Carney would claim a 7-6 win in the third set to claim the match and win for Georgia State.

The Bears will be back in action on Monday, February 14 against Kennesaw State in Macon, GA.
