Utah Bests Bears on Saturday

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah used a trio of big innings to roll to a 25-8 victory over Mercer and even the nonconference series Saturday at Smith's Ballpark.

The Utes (14-8-1) slugged out a season-high 26 hits in the middle game of the set. Utah trailed 4-2 heading into the bottom of the third inning, but the Utes scored five runs to take a 7-4 lead and never looked back.

Both teams scored a run in the fourth, but the Utes picked up one in the fifth and then broke out for seven in the sixth to take a commanding 16-5 advantage.

Utah plated nine more in the eighth inning.

The Bears (19-5) stranded 13 runners on the basepaths, including six in scoring position.

Trevor Austin led Mercer at the plate with a 3 for 5 performance that included a double. Antonio Brown and Bill Knight had two hits apiece. Treyson Hughes hit his seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot in the ninth.

Meanwhile, six Ute hitters ended with at least three hits in the game. Landon Frei was 5 for 7 with three RBIs. TJ Clarkson was 5 of 6 with a double, a 3-run homer and 7 RBIs.

Tanner Hall (1-2) suffered the loss after giving up seven runs in 2.2 innings.

Dusty Schramm (2-0) received the win in relief, as he held the Bears to one run in 2.2 frames.

The final game of the series will take place at 1 p.m. ET Sunday.
