Mercer takes road series over Utes
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Collin Price drove in four runs, including three on his team-leading ninth home run of the season, to fuel Mercer's 11-5 win over Utah in the rubber game of the series Sunday at Smith's Ballpark.
Price had three hits, including the fourth-inning blast, to lead the Bears (20-5) to their fifth weekend series win this spring.
The Suwanee native put Mercer on the board in the opening panel with a single that scored Colby Thomas.
The Bears plated three runs in the third, including two on Angelo DiSpigna's single.
The Utes (14-9-1) put their first two runs on the board in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead in half.
Mercer responded in a big way in the fourth, scoring six times.
Antonio Brown started the inning with a leadoff bunt single. He scored on Jozsef Rohrbacher's single two batters later. Thomas then walked to load the bases. Treyson Hughes drew a four-pitch walk just after that pushed Wesley Franklin across the plate.
Bill Knight then reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Rohrbacher to score. Price dug into the box next and cleared the bases with the homer over the wall in left field.
Utah picked up two tallies in the bottom of the inning and one more in the seventh to cut the Bears' advantage to 10-5.
However, Mercer wasn't finished, as Franklin scored once more on a balk in the eighth.
The Bears totaled 13 hits in the series-clinching win. Thomas joined Price with three hits, including a double and a triple. DiSpigna had a pair of knocks with a double and two RBIs.
Josh Farmer started on the mound for Mercer. The righty worked 3.1 innings before turning the ball over to the bullpen. Ryan Lobus (3-1) picked up the victory, hurling 2.2 scoreless stanzas with one strikeout and only one hit allowed.
Cam Day (1-3) was tagged with the loss after yielding nine runs on nine hits and three walks in three-plus innings on the mound.
The Bears will return to Macon to host Georgia State Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
