Mercer shuts out UNC Asheville on Saturday, 6-0
MACON, Ga. - Tanner Hall and Avery Stephens combined on a two-hit shutout for Mercer in a 6-0 victory over UNC Asheville Saturday at OrthoGeorgia Park.
Â
Hall (1-1) faced only one over the minimum and struck out a season-high six in five strong innings of work. He scattered a pair of singles to hold the Bulldogs (3-8) in check in the middle game of the series. The left-hander gave up a single to the second batter of the game, but then retired 12 consecutive before allowing another hit in the fifth.
Â
Stephens retired the first nine batters he faced out of the bullpen. He pitched four scoreless innings, giving up only a walk to earn his first save of the year.
Â
Meanwhile, Bill Knight, Le Bassett and Trevor Austin provided the run support for the Bears (10-1).
Â
Knight was 3 for 5 with two RBIs, while Austin also had three hits and drove in a run. Bassett finished 2 for 4 at the dish with three RBIs.
Â
Knight broke the scoring seal in the third inning, as he lined a single into left field that plated Antonio Brown.
Â
Trevor Austin posted a two-out double in the fifth ahead of Knight. The right-handed hitter logged a ground-rule double to send Austin across the plate to double the Mercer lead.
COACH GIBSON'S THOUGHTS
Â
After Collin Price was intentionally walked, Bassett stepped in and turned on a pitch to hammer a three-run homer over the right-field wall. It marked his fourth home run of the campaign.
Â
The Bears tacked on a sixth run in the eighth, as Austin placed a single into center field, which allowed Brown to score from third.
Â
Mercer tallied double-digit hits for the sixth time this spring. The Bears finished with 11 knocks, including three that went for extra bases.
Â
The two teams will wrap up the set Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
