Mercer walks off No. 13 Georgia Tech, 5-4

MACON, Ga. – David Burke lined a single into left field with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning that allowed Treyson Hughes to score the winning run from second base, giving Mercer a 5-4 victory over No. 13 Georgia Tech Tuesday night at OrthoGeorgia Park.

Burke came off the bench as a pinch hitter to face the left-handed Joseph Mannelly. Hughes was at second base after reaching on an infield single and then advancing on William Mapes' sacrifice bunt.

Mannelly started the at-bat with two consecutive strikes, but Burke worked the count full before turning on the final pitch of the game to push the Bears (12-1) to their fifth straight victory.

The Yellow Jackets (10-3) pulled even in the top of the inning when Colin Hall hit a solo homer.

Luke Sutko (2-0) received the win after coming on in the ninth to strike out two batters.

Dawson Brown (0-1) took the loss for Georgia Tech, as the righthander was on the hook for the run that crossed the plate to end the game.

Georgia Tech took a 2-0 advantage into the bottom of the fifth inning before Colby Thomas unleashed a two-run homer that traveled 445 feet to tie the game.

The Jackets again jumped in front a stanza later on Drew Compton's solo shot.

However, Mercer answered in the bottom of the panel to reclaim the lead.

Bill Knight led off with a single through the middle of the infield. After Collin Price's fly out, Le Bassett dug in and hit a two-run homer over the wall in right-center to put the Bears in front 4-3.

The game went scoreless over the next two innings before the dramatic finish.

The Bears pitching staff limited the Jackets to five hits on the night.

Ryan Lobus started the game and struck out four in five-plus innings of work. Jackson Kelley had a strong effort out of the bullpen, striking out five in 2.2 panels.

Mercer will return to action Friday against Saint Peter's. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
