Mercer shuts out Pirates on Friday
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Josh Harlow and Jackson Kelley combined on a three-hit shutout to lead Mercer to a 1-0 victory over Seton Hall in the series opener Friday evening at Owen T. Carroll Field.
The pitching duo combined to strike out 11 batters in the win.
Harlow (4-1) posted a quality start after limiting the Pirates (5-19) to only two hits in 6.1 innings. He fanned seven and walked two before giving the ball to Kelley.
Kelley picked up his second save of the campaign after allowing only one hit and striking out four in the final 2.2 frames.
The Bears (22-5) picked up the game's only run in the fourth inning on Angelo DiSpigna's sacrifice fly.
Treyson Hughes led off the decisive stanza with a walk. Bill Knight followed with a single that allowed Hughes to advance all the way to third base. After Collin Price walked to load the bases, DiSpigna drove in Hughes on the sac fly.
Mercer had just two hits in the opener, Knight's fourth-inning single and a DiSpigna single in the second.
The shutout was the Bears' fifth of the season.
The two teams will continue the series Saturday at 1 p.m.
