Mercer falls 5-0 to Terriers
MACON, Ga. – Mercer stranded 15 runners on base, including seven in scoring position, in a 5-0 loss to No. 24 Wofford Saturday afternoon at OrthoGeorgia Park.
The Bears (31-8, 6-2 SoCon) left runners at third base in the third and fourth innings, and then loaded the bases in the fifth and eighth innings without scoring a run. The Bears also had a runner at second when the ninth inning ended.
Three pitchers combined on the shutout for the Terriers (30-9, 8-0 SoCon).
Josh Vitus (4-3) scattered three hits and struck out three in 5.0 innings to earn the win. Coulson Buchanan gave up a hit in 2.2 frames, while Dalton Rhadans closed out the game with 1.1 scoreless to pick up his ninth save of the season.
Wofford claimed the early advantage with three runs in the second inning. Jack Renwick posted an RBI double, while Marshall Toole drove in the third run on a single to left field.
Treyson Hughes doubled with two outs in the bottom of the third, and moved to third on a wild pitch. However, he was stranded there to quell the threat.
Blake Schmitt reached on a fielder's choice the following panel and moved into scoring position on an infield single by Trevor Austin. Another fielder's choice allowed Schmitt to reach third base. Vitus worked out of the jam with a groundout to keep the shutout in place.
Vitus walked two and gave up a single to Bill Knight in the fifth, which loaded the bases for Mercer. Collin Price then hit a tapper off the end of the bat that saw Vitus flip the ball to the plate for the force out. He then forced Schmitt to pop out leave the bases full.
The Terriers scored solo runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to increase their advantage to 5-0.
The Bears again loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth, but Rhadans was called into the game. The side-winding righty struck out Colby Thomas to end the stanza.
Hughes led off the ninth with a single to right center. Two batters later, he moved up to second after Angelo DiSpigna was hit by a pitch. However, Rhadans struck out Price and Schmitt to close out the contest.
Hughes finshed the game with two of Mercer's five hits.
Ryan Lobus (5-2) took the loss after giving up three runs on five hits in 6.0 innings. Lobus also struck out seven and walked four.
The Bears will attempt to salvage the series during Sunday's finale, which starts at 1 p.m.
