Dr. Jeffrey Hugdahl, faculty athletic representative for Mercer, accepted the 2022 Barrett-Bonner Award from Southern Conference Commissioner Jim Schaus
MACON, Ga. – Mercer University won its seventh consecutive Barrett-Bonner Award from the Southern Conference following the 2021-22 academic year. The award was presented Wednesday night at the Honors Dinner which wrapped up the 2022 SoCon spring meetings in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
Â
The Barrett-Bonner Award is given to the SoCon institution that places the highest percentage of its student-athletes on the league's academic honor roll. Mercer placed 78.5% of its student-athletes on the Southern Conference Honor Roll.
Â
"We are very proud of our student-athletes and academic support staff for attaining this honor," said Mercer Director of Athletics Jim Cole. "This award is a direct result of the work done by Sybil Blalock and her staff and it certifies our commitment to success in the classroom."
Â
Mercer has won the award each year it has been eligible since joining the conference during the 2014-15 academic year, and its seven-year winning streak surpasses former member, Davidson, who won six consecutive from 2008-09 to 2013-14. In its 30-year existence, Mercer and Davidson are the only schools to win the Barrett-Bonner Award on multiple occasions and have combined to win 27 times.
Â
First presented in 1994, the Barrett-Bonner Award is named after Col. John G. Barrett, faculty athletics representative at Virginia Military Institute from 1965-87, and Dr. Francis W. Bonner, faculty athletics representative at Furman University from 1968-90.
