Whitely, Buchanan Picked All-Conference
The Mercer women's soccer team is picked third in the preseason vote of Southern Conference coaches, behind last year's conference champion Samford and runner-up Furman. The Bears garnered 60 points in the poll, just one behind second-place Furman. Samford topped the poll with 81 points.
Along with a strong team showing in the poll, senior midfielder Ciara Whitely and fifth year senior defender Kylie Buchanan each earned a spot on the SoCon Preseason All-Conference team. Both were 2021 second team all-conference picks.
Coaches were not allowed to vote for players on their own team in casting their ballots.
The remaining teams on the preseason poll behind the Bears were Western Carolina, Chattanooga, UNCG, ETSU, The Citadel, Wofford and VMI.
The Bears begin the season with an exhibition game at Alabama State Aug. 12. The regular season opens Aug. 18 at Campbell. The 2022 version of the women's soccer team makes its home debut at Betts Stadium on Sunday, Aug. 21, against Charleston Southern.
