Järvelä Leads Way In Her First Mercer Tourney
New Orleans — Camilla Järvelä didn't waste any time making an impact with the Mercer Bears' women's golf team. The Finnish native led the way for the Bears with a seventh-place finish in the Green Wave Classic in New Orleans on Tuesday and Wednesday. That helped Mercer to a seventh-place finish in the 14-team field.
Järvelä shot a five under par 67 in her third round to finish at 8-under 208 for the tournament. She was even par in the first round and three under in the middle round. She finished only six shots behind medalist Kelli Strand of Nebraksa and was only one shot behind Megan Whittaker, also of Nebraska.
"Camilla had a terrific tournament and Mercer debut. She struck the ball beautifully but what was more impressive was the management of her strategy and execution," Bears coach Michele Drinkard said. "She had a plan for every hole and stuck to it."
The other Bear under par for the tourney was sophomore Mikayla Dubnik who was one under 215 for the tournament.
"Mikayla also had a terrific tournament. She took the summer and really improved her ball striking and it showed," Drinkard said.
After a strong 67 in the middle round, Carol Pyon slipped to an 81 on Tuesday to finish with 223 and Kate Song was right behind her at 224. Tracy Rodriguez was +11 at 227 for the Bears.
Mercer's team total of 863 placed the Bears seventh of the 14 teams. LSU won the team tournament with 832, followed by Nebraska at 835. Tulsa finished third at 838.
Drinkard said it was a good start and liked the contributions from everyone and their contributions. "This group is gritty and going to be fun to watch this season," she said.
Mercer will take part in the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate Tournament Sept. 19-20 in Knoxville, Tennessee.
