Bears Fall at First Match at Home

Mercer drops home opener 3-1 to Southern Mississippi
Macon, Ga.- The Mercer Bears volleyball team fell to the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles Friday night at the Mercer Bear Classic, 3-1.Â
Set One | The Bears took an early lead and led 8-5 by the first time out. While the teams stayed close, Mercer would take the lead to win the set 25-15. The team finished the set with a .400 HIT%.
Set Two | Southern Mississippi came out of the gate hot and took a 14-9 lead. The Bears chipped away at the lead with big kills from Annie Karle and Kiera McCarles. The Golden Eagles pulled away to take the set, 25-16.
Set Three | The third set would bring an early 5-0 lead for the Golden Eagles. The Bears would come back and close the deficit at the first time out, to 16-12. Jaida Howell scored a major kill that worked to close the gap. Southern Mississippi regained the momentum enough to take the set, 25-21
Set Four | Mercer rallied from an early deficit in a set that had a constant back-and-forth battle. The teams got even at 23, as the Bears tried to force a fifth set. But a service winner for Southern Mississippi sealed the final set, 25-23.Â
The tournament's first match was won by Charleston Southern, who overcame a two-set deficit to rally for a 3-2 win over Queens.Â
UP NEXT
The Bears will continue to play at home on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. against the Queens University of Charlotte and Charleston Southern at 6 p.m.
