MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's tennis program opens the 2023 season on the road against Alabama and Kennesaw State on Saturday and Monday, respectively.

SCOUTING ALABAMA
This is the second year in a row the Bears open the season against Alabama. The Tide will play fellow Southern Conference member Samford on Saturday morning before facing Mercer.
Alabama finished the 2022 season 9-21 overall and 0-12 in the SEC. The Tide earned a first round win over Vanderbilt in the SEC Tournament, 4-3, before losing to No. 5 Tennessee.

The Tide currently have two ranked singles players in Enzo Aguiard (No. 35) and Roan Jones (No. 96). Aguiard earned four wins over ranked singles opponents during the fall while Jones led the team with 11 singles wins. Alabama also has the reigning ITA Southern Region Rookie of the Year and SEC Freshman of the Year, Filip Planinsek.

SCOUTING KENNESAW STATE
For the third straight year, the Bears will face in-state foes Kennesaw State. At ITA Southeast Regionals in the fall, Nemanja Stefanovic defeated KSU's Harvey Conway 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of qualifying singles. Stefanovic also took down Seru Tezuka 6-2, 7-5 at the Mercer Gridiron Classic. In doubles, Mariano Argote and Samuel MacLeod swept Hugo Salmeron/Tezuka, 6-0.

Kennesaw State finished as 2022 regular season ASUN champions but lost the first match of the conference tournament. The Owls finished 15-6 overall and 7-1 in the conference. KSU beat No. 60 Furman, 4-1, at home last season. Head coach Matt Emery was named the ASUN Coach of the Year for the first time in program history.

Junior Raul Garcia currently represents the Owls in the ITA rankings as the 98th-ranked singles player which is the highest rank in KSU history.
