Erin Houpt scored a career-high 31 points, but Mercer couldn't get enough stops down the stretch in a 76-71 defeat to Wofford on Thursday night.
Enjulina Gonzalez was the other Mercer player to score in double-figures as she had 18 points on 9-of-15 shooting, but Gonzalez got in foul trouble in the second half and the Bears couldn't execute the same on both ends of the floor.
Erin Houpt scored her 31 points shooting 9-for-19 from the field including 9-for-18 from three-point range. Her nine made 3-pointers were the most made 3-pointers in a game by a Mercer player since Keke Calloway made 12 against Furman in January of 2018.Â
Summah Evans had nine points and 14 rebounds, with her first 10 rebounds all coming in the first half.
Each team made 10 3-pointers in the game. Mercer had 17 turnovers to Wofford's seven. The Terriers outscored Mercer 23-10 in points off turnovers.
SCOUTING FURMAN
Furman is coming off a 20-14 season in 2021-22. The Paladins went 10-4 in conference play. The Paladins were picked to finish third in the eight team league in the preseason coaches poll.
Furman is in the middle of the pack in the SoCon in scoring offense (5th) and scoring defense (4th). They have struggled shooting the ball from three-point range as they are seventh in the conference at just 27.1 percent.
The Paladins are the best rebounding team in the Socon, averaging 43.1 rebounds per game. They rank fifth in the country with 17.2 offensive rebounds per game.
Furman's leading scorer is Grace van Rij, who averages 12.9 points per game. For the season, van Rij is shooting 52.9 percent from the floor.
Furman has the conference's second leading rebounder in Sydney James who averages 8.3 rebounds per game.

This will be the 29th meeting all-time between Mercer and Furman. Mercer leads the series 22-6.
