
Nine-Run Sixth Boosts Bears to 21-5 Win Over FAMU

Hughes and Toth each hit 3 RBI HR in 6th Inning
The Bears got on the board in the early innings with intuitive base running. The third inning saw doubles by Reid Brown and Bradley Frye score two runs, bringing the score line to 6-0. The next two innings went scoreless for both sides.
The flood gates opened in the sixth inning as the FAMU pitching staff faced 12 Mercer batters. Trevor Austin batted in the first run of the inning with a single. Eric Toth hit a three-run blast to left field, scoring Treyson Hughes and Austin. With the bases loaded, Carter Geier stepped up to the plate and hit an RBI single to score Jozsef Rohrbacher. Frye was due up and hit a sacrifice fly to plate R. Brown. In his second at-bat of the inning, Hughes went yard to score three more for the Bears and increase the score to 15-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Rattlers grabbed two runs off a single by Joseph Pierini. Mercer added two more to the total in the seventh inning, and FAMU hit an RBI double in the eighth to set the score at 17-3.
Hughes earned his fourth RBI of the day with a single in the ninth, scoring R. Brown. Sam Stewart hit the first home run of his career in the ninth, bringing Frye and Hughes home to make it 21 runs for the Bears. FAMU scored two more in the ninth thanks to a home run by Griffin Long.
21 runs scored is the most against FAMU since 2016 and the 4th-most ever in the series.
Toth improved his season batting average to .500 after earning three hits in four at-bats. Hughes, Austin, and R. Brown each recorded two hits. Hughes has now crossed home plate nine times so far this season and is tied for the team-lead in RBI with five. 10 players logged hits against the Rattlers and 12 scored.
Walt Thomas (1-0) started on the mound for the Bears, pitching two innings and allowing zero hits, zero runs, and two walks while striking out two batters. Jess Ackerman entered in relief for his first appearance for Mercer to pitch 3.1 innings. Colton Cosper helped minimize the damage in the sixth inning before Alex McKay, Micah Takac, and Connor Folds each pitched an inning to close out the night. The pitching staff combined for nine strikeouts.
