Late Comeback Falls Short Against Georgia Southern

Two home runs each for Cherry and Dalley
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer baseball program (14-8) came up just short in a ninth inning comeback against Georgia Southern (11-10), falling 12-11 on Wednesday night at OrthoGeorgia Park. 10 of Mercer's 11 runs were scored from home runs.
Mercer took an emphatic lead in the second inning with a pair of two-run home runs. Jackson Cherry went yard for the first time this season, scoring Jozsef Rohrbacher who reached on a single. After Carter Geier singled, Ty Dalley hit his sixth home run of the season to give the Bears a 4-0 lead.
Georgia Southern responded immediately with five runs in the top of the third, including two home runs. Mercer retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth with the second home runs of the day for both Cherry and Dalley.
Dalley added his fourth RBI of the day with a single in the fifth to plate Trevor Austin. Both teams went scoreless in the sixth until the Eagles added five runs in the seventh. Georgia Southern added two more on a home run in the eighth.
The Bears scored the only run not from a home run in the eighth from a ground out by Cherry, scoring Conner Todaro for Cherry's fourth RBI of the day. To open the ninth inning, Dalley reached after getting hit by a pitch and Antonio Brown singled to set up a three-run shot by Treyson Hughes. After getting within one, Mercer could not score any more, leaving the score at 12-11 in favor of Georgia Southern.
Colton Cosper made his first start of the season with two scoreless innings. The sophomore struck out two and only allowed one hit and one walk.
