
Mercer Begins SoCon Play with Win Over The Citadel

Five-run first powered Bears to 7-3 win
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Mercer baseball program (15-8, 1-0) opened Southern Conference play with a 7-3 win over The Citadel (13-8, 0-1) on Friday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. Saturday's game between Mercer and The Citadel has been moved up to 1 p.m. due to the threat of rain.
The Bears jumped out to an early lead with five runs in the first. From the leadoff spot, Treyson Hughes reached on a throwing error and scored on a throwing error. Jackson Cherry, who finished 2-for-4, singled and crossed home on a ground out by Trevor Austin. The next three runs were scored from base hits by Eli Runyan, Carter Geier, and Ty Dalley.
After going through the entire order in the first, Cherry stepped up to the plate in the second and hit his third home run of the week. Mercer did not score again until the eighth inning but held the Bulldogs to just three runs.
Ryan Lobus (3-1) started on the mound for the Bears, recording five hits, three runs, two walks, and four strikeouts in five innings. Wesley Franklin threw four scoreless innings and struck out a season-high six batters which is just one shy of a career high. The junior earned his fifth save of the year after allowing only two hits and three walks.
Friday notched the fifth-straight victory over The Citadel for the Bears. Mercer is now 26-6 against the Bulldogs under head coach Craig Gibson.
