
Farmer Powers Bears to Series Victory in Defensive Battle

Redshirt senior threw career-high 8.0 innings
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Mercer baseball program (16-8, 2-0) earned a series victory over The Citadel (13-9, 0-2) with a win on Saturday, 4-3, at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. Sunday's game between Mercer and The Citadel has been moved up to 12 p.m. due to the threat of rain.
Josh Farmer (2-2) threw eight innings, allowing just three runs, four hits, and two walks while striking out two batters. Eight innings pitched is a career-high for the redshirt senior. Holton McGaha entered in relief in the ninth inning to earn his second save of the year.
The Bears took an early lead for the second time in the series with one run in the first. Trevor Austin singled through the left side to score Treyson Hughes from second base. The Bulldogs only scored in one inning, plating three in the third from base hits. Mercer added another run in the top of the seventh after Bradley Frye tripled and Hughes lined out to left field to plate Frye.
The breakthrough play for the Bears came in the top of the eighth. During Ty Dalley's at-bat, Carter Geier stole second and Jozsef Rohrbacher stole third to advance both runners to scoring position. Dalley then launched a double to right center to score Rohrbacher and Geier and take a 4-3 lead for Mercer.
